This is a great remodel project demonstrating what can be done with a small, existing house in an established neighborhood. The very high energy efficiency goals are elegantly balanced with the desire to keep the house small and well-suited to the neighborhood. Maximizing the use of the small space available and balancing health, safety, comfort, function, aesthetics, energy conservation, and value for money make this a really interesting project. This is an excellent example of what can be done with an existing small house including upgraded insulation and air-sealing, 98% furnace and on-demand water heating, Heat Recovery Ventilation, R5 fiberglass windows, reuse of a complete existing home, and use of reclaimed materials.

Sun Study on Tom and Linda's Passive House project in Missoula, MontanaTom and Linda’s Passive House, Missoula, Montana

Passive House” is THE most stringent energy efficiency standard in the world and Tom and Linda Hellem are building one here in Missoula, Montana. This project will incorporate super energy efficiency goals as well as maximizing the use of both the lot (an infill lot close to existing services) and the small space in the house. Eventually their plans call for building two of these houses on the available land but for now they are starting with their own house and trying to make it as affordable, comfortable, durable, and energy efficient as they possibly can. This project incorporates Passive solar Design with almost unbelievable levels of insulation and air-tightness. To the point where the main heating system for the house will be a small, electric heater in the ducting for the extremely efficient Energy Recovery Ventilator.
